Did you know that over 80 percent of goods traded internationally are transported by sea? This makes the shipping sector a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, but efforts to reduce its carbon footprint are under way.

Green shipping corridors - routes between ports where all transport is emission-free - are part of the new wave of climate-friendly solutions. The Nordic countries and more than a dozen other nations are taking the lead in setting up these corridors, which they hope will set a precedent for the rest of the world.

In this episode, we look at the progress being made on creating the first green shipping corridors, and we investigate the environmental benefits of sailing green from port to port.

This episode comes from a Nordic Talks event held in Lisbon and arranged by the UN Global Compact Network in Norway in collaboration with the Norwegian Embassy in Portugal, and the Danish and Swedish UN Global Compact Networks.

Ingrid Sidenvall Jegou (Sweden)

Ingrid Sidenvall Jegou is a Project Director at the Global Maritime Forum, an international not-for-profit organisation committed to shaping the future of global seaborne trade. Previously she was a senior adviser with 2050 Consulting, a Swedish firm working towards enhanced sustainability and increased profitability. She has also been Climate, Energy and Natural Resources Director at the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development, a Swiss not-for-profit organisation that seeks to advance sustainable development through trade-related policymaking.

Jan-Christoph Napierski (Denmark)

Jan-Christoph Napierski joined the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping as Head of Regulatory Affairs in 2021. He is leading the center's work with policy and regulations with the aim of reaching global zero carbon shipping by 2050. Jan-Christoph has more than 15 years of experience in policymaking, most recently as a diplomat at the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he worked on maritime security policy, maritime trade, economic diplomacy, and sustainability.

Katharine Palmer (UK)

Katharine Palmer is currently seconded to the UN High-Level Climate Champions team as Shipping Lead from her post as Global Head of Sustainability for Maritime at Lloyd's Register. With nearly 20 years of experience in the shipping industry, Katharine is an established thought leader and expert on environmental and sustainability issues within the maritime value chain. She works with many industry initiatives and collaborations, including the Global Maritime Forum's Getting to Zero Coalition.
